STUPA REBUILDING PROJECT

Our first Stupa restoration in Ladakh was a great success. The 3-year project involved the whole community of Zangla-Zanskar (1500 people), working with Lamas and local technicians. The restored Stupa, visible from a great distance, symbolises recovery of the local tradition and a spiritual and material renewal for the whole valley. Organizing people and materials in the remote environment taught us important lessons, which will help future restorations happen more quickly.

SOLAR PANELS

While restructuring the Stupa of Zangla, we also installed 5 solar panels (32 points light) donated by the German companies STECA, WAGNER & Co and DONAUER. The panels illuminate the nunnery (15 people), elementary school (38 boys) and Zangla Castle. Electricity is otherwise completely absent in the village and the need is very strong.

EMERGENCY HELP

During any trip related to Stupa restoration, we always provide a "first help" to assuage the most urgent sanitary and dental problems. These are offered as free clinics in the villages along the main road. In addition, Italian Doctors in collaboration with the "House of Tibet" www.casadeltibet.it apprentice local volunteers and leave instructions, to continue such work after their departure.

SCHOOLS

The only elementary school in Zangla village has 38 children but no qualified teachers or didactic equipment. In the last 3 years, Stupa Onlus provided books, notebooks, stationery and solar panels for the classes in collaboration with "Jamyang Foundation" (www.jamyang.org). We also have a future programme to develop a staff of local teachers who will provide competent, effective scholastic activity.

HYGIENIC SERVICES

Following a meeting in which all Zangla village people participated, STUPA Onlus was asked to contribute to making local public hygienic services next to the Castle and in the agricultural fields. The jobs were finished in the summer 2009.
