How we work |
|
Buddha, Dharma Sangha refers to a set of principles known as ‘The Three Jewels of Buddhism’. These are irreducible elements required for space to organize itself in a sustainable way. In modern terms, we can say the principles refer to people who are natural leaders, people who like to keep the rules and those who test and try new products to find better ways of working and being. Every society on earth has these three parts to it, or it falls apart.
In Stupa Restoration, we engage exactly these three types of people from the local community and volunteers. The Buddha function is carried out by a local Lama or Teacher, who has a connection with other teachers of enlightenment. The Dharma function is carried out by Engineers or Architects, who have knowledge of making (spiritual) things concrete. This can be as simple as knowing to use mud instead of stone, for Stupas located in environments with extreme temperate fluctuations. The Sangha function is carried out by the Mayor of each village and the local people or Western volunteers, who contribute to carrying mud and building.
The process of rebuilding can take several years. When rebuilding is complete, there is a party; a ritual consecration with all friends. But first, STUPA ONLUS generally makes a trip to the area to check everything out. We find local guides and translators. We trek and ride jeeps to remote parts of the land, asking locals what is important to them. We have informal meetings with the Mayors and Lamas we find along the way. We invite friends to join us on these trips and we also run study trips, where people learn about the Buddhist Technologies as well as about these projects. When all the friends are in place, STUPA ONLUS funds between 50-100% of the material cost of rebuilding. We also make matching donations to local projects including extension of nunneries, supplying books to schools and enabling light (solar panels) to shine in places of significance. All our funding comes from donations of members and friends of STUPA ONLUS. |
